Patients with Psoriasis at Higher Risk for Renal Disease

A study presented at the recent meeting of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology and published in the Journal of Dermatological Science showed that severe psoriasis is an independent risk factor for renal disease. Researchers from Taiwan reported that patients with severe psoriasis had a 1.9-fold increase in the risk of new-onset chronic kidney disease and a 3-fold increase of end-stage renal disease compared with controls. Ching-Chi Chi, MD, MMS, DPhil, and colleagues stated that the renal function of patients with severe psoriasis should be regularly assessed, and the long-term use of nephrotoxic drugs avoided.
